November 2013
In early November my family and I moved to Japan. The first few days after we arrived I thought I had escaped jet lag, but then I started waking up at four o'clock in the morning and crashing around seven in the evening for the next four to five days. Getting tired that early made it difficult to do simple things like go out to eat at restaurants on base.
December 2013
By early December we were out of the Navy Lodge and into a house off base. It's really nice since the house is fairly close to base, but we're also immersed in the Japanese culture. I think all of us were happy to be in a house, and not the Lodge, for Christmas this past year.
January 2014
By January my sister and I were plugged back into dance. There is not as much offered here, only ballet/pointe, but it was nice to be dancing again and I'm glad we could find not one but two studios that offered good classes. We take classes once a week at two different studios (one day at studio A and another day at studio B) because both have different things we like (Studio A has more students our age while studio B has smaller classes that allows for more individual technical instruction), and we were both used to dancing five, sometimes six, days a week.
May 2014
In May, a ship called the Logos Hope came to Nagasaki, Japan. The Logos Hope is a ship with a completely volunteer crew of 400 people (many of them serving for 1-2 years) that sails the world spreading Knowledge, Help, and Hope. I went and volunteered as a part of their DEEP program for the ten days they were in port and open to the public. I worked in book fair, the main draw people have to come visit ship, and had an amazing experience. It was incredible meeting crew members and serving the people of Nagasaki as they came to the ship. I have decided that I would like to join the ship for a few months after I graduate before moving back to the States late next fall.
That about covers the highlights of the past year. For the most part it was pretty great!
